A low-cost voluntary program is described in which first-year students were assigned to shadow randomly selected first-year residents during their clinical duties for several hours a month, for a mean total of 44.5 hours.  Nearly all participants enjoyed the experience, and about three fourths felt that the students would be better prepared for their clerkships.–Laura Willett, MD
